Date TBD
Fayetteville Public Library
The Willard and Pat Walker Community Room
In a youth-centered program, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas features its guest artist Sandeep Das in a collaboration with the Fayetteville Public Library and the Ra-Ve Cultural Foundation. This engagement at the Fayetteville Public Library is a great opportunity for young audiences to meet a Grammy-winning musician and discover stories of inspiration, perseverance, and global perspective.
The event will be an interactive and educational experience – part performance, part demonstration with ample opportunity for kids to interact with master tabla artist Sandeep Das, who has traveled to more than 50 countries performing with artists like Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFarin, and Paquito D'Rivera. SoNA's Music Director Paul Haas will kick off the event with a book reading of a classic Indian story.
Inspired by the spirit of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" — the beautiful ideal of inclusion, empathy, and global community — Sandeep will not only demonstrate the possibilities of the instrument and its musical history, but will share fun and exciting stories from his travels, imparting the beautiful values of connection and meaning that music can provide. "It's important we open a window in the hearts and minds of the children to something beyond what they usually encounter in their daily lives...to leave them with a positive experience that might just help them make a good decision in the future." – Sandeep Das
At the end of the event, attendees will have the opportunity to touch and play tablas provided by the Ra-Ve Cultural Foundation. After this event, if the young minds are inspired, Sandeep Das will perform the Tabla Concerto by Dinuk Wijeratne with SoNA at the Walton Arts Center on Saturday, February 26th, and all children under 18 are encouraged to attend at no cost with an accompanying adult ticket-holder.
Rhythm of Life - A Musical Journey with Sandeep Das is part of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas' new SoNA Beyond series, which seeks to rethink the boundaries of what a symphony can do to innovate the artform, include new voices, and immerse SoNA in the Northwest Arkansas community – and to give audiences an expansive view of what classical music is and who it serves.
