Oceans of Time: Orchestral Evolutions

September 21, 2024 – 7:30PM
Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville

Program:

Johann Sebastian Bach – Brandenburg Concerto No. 3

Aldo López-Gavilán – Oceans to Cross

Lara Downes, piano

Antonín Dvořák – Symphony No. 8

We launch the new SoNA season with an engrossing westward journey from classical music’s European birthplace all the way to the multicultural mecca of the Americas. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, one of the most beloved pieces in the entire orchestral repertoire, highlights the soloistic contributions of SoNA’s individual string players. The world premiere of Lopez-Gavilan’s magnificent Oceans to Cross features the extraordinary virtuosity of pianist Lara Downes. And after intermission, SoNA musicians perform Dvorak’s ever-popular Symphony No. 8 – the Czech composer lived in the U.S. for three years in the 1890’s and is in many ways responsible for discovering and labeling many of the folk music elements that eventually combined to become the “American Style.” Don’t miss what is sure to be an electric season opener!
