Through SoNA Voices, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas celebrates the individual voices of the orchestra. This concert features SoNA Principal Oboist, Theresa Delaplain in a varied program of works for oboe and string instruments.
The collection includes two old favorites, Mozart's "Oboe Quartet" and Benjamin Britten's "Phantasy Quartet." Also on the program is the Trio for Oboe, Violin and Viola by Grazyna Bacewicz, Poland's leading 20th-century female composer; and another quartet, "Emblems," by local composer Robert Mueller. Theresa chose this set of works because of the compelling musical message of each work, together offering a variety of approaches and styles. While the music highlights the oboe, violin (Miho Oda Sakon), viola (Jesse Collette), and cello (Kari Caldwell) are also integral voices in this concert.
Theresa Delaplain teaches oboe and music theory at the University of Arkansas. In addition to being Principal Oboist of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, she is Principal Oboist with the Arkansas Philharmonic and the Fort Smith Symphony. She is oboist with the Lyrique Quintete, and has performed with the Tulsa Symphony, The Tulsa Signature Symphony, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchesta. Dr. Delaplain has performed concertos with the Thai National Orchestra, the Fort Smith Symphony, the North Arkansas Symphony, and the University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind Symphony. She has commissioned and premiered several new works involving oboe, and has recently released an album of works for oboe and piano entitled Souvenirs. She is also the author of an oboe reed-making book entitled My Kingdom for a Reed! and a YouTube channel called "Something to Crow About." Dr. Delaplain has taught at the Saarburg International Music Festival in Germany, and at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Summer Arts Camp. She studied with Sara Bloom, Richard Killmer, John Bentley, Arno Mariotti, and Rachel Brudnoy.
